BUIES CREEK — Coastal Carolina scored seven unanswered touchdowns, topping Campbell 58-21 on Wednesday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium.
The Chanticleers of the Football Bowl Subdivision moved to 2-1 with the win, handing Campbell (2-1), a Football Championship Subdivision member, its first loss of the season.
Wednesday’s game marked the first time a FBS program has visited a FCS foe in a true road game since Army traveled to Yale in 2014, and just the third time since 2008. The matchup was originally slated for Saturday, September 15, in Conway, S.C., but was moved up three days and to Buies Creek due to Hurricane Florence.
Campbell found the end zone on its first three possessions to lead 21-10 after Rocky Reid punched in a 1-yard run, set up by Aaron Blockmon’s 38-yard grab from Daniel Smith.
Coastal answered with an 81-yard strike from Kilton Anderson to Ky’Jon Tyler on the next play from scrimmage. A possession later, the Chanticleers took their first lead of the day with Anderson finding Malcolm Williams for his second touchdown, a 38-yard pass that punctuated a six play, 81 yard drive and gave CCU a 24-21 halftime lead.
Torrance Marable posted a pair of touchdowns to start the second half on the way to a 34-point half for the visiting Chanticleers.
The Camels totaled 217 yards of offense through its first three possessions before being held to 89 over their final seven drives.
On CU’s opening drive, Smith guided a 10-play, 80-yard march, finding Caleb Snead alone in the end zone for the game’s first score. After a CCU answer, Campbell again drove into the red zone, and with the Camels facing a 3rd-and-12 from the 14 yard line, Smith scrambled left and dove for the left pylon for his third rushing TD of the season.
Smith was 16-of-34 passing for 218 yards and a touchdown, adding 15 yards rushing with a score for the game. Snead collected four passes for a team-high 72 yards, while Blockmon had 63 yards on four catches. Joshua Jones added 33 yards on five carries.
Anderson paced Coastal on the offensive side with 202 yards passing and three touchdowns, converting 10-of-14 throws while rushing for 67 yards. Coastal ran for 333 yards on the day, totaling 574 yards of total offense. Marable chipped in 64 yards and two scores, while Marcus Outlaw posted 63 yards on the ground with a TD. Williams finished with a game-high 75 yards and two touchdowns on four catches.
Jack Ryan led Campbell with nine tackles, while Deontae Henderson chipped in seven with an interception. Ray Miller and Kam Prewitt added seven tackles apiece.
Jeffrey Gunter paced Coastal with five tackles, including three stops for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. Five different Chanticleers tallied six stops each.
The game marked Campbell’s third all-time (since 2008) against a FBS member, making trips to Old Dominion in 2013 and Appalachian State in 2014.
Campbell will host Shaw on September 22 at 6 p.m. at Barker-Lane Stadium. The contest will be the second of four consecutive nonconference home games for the Camels.
