Lee edges Eagles in eight innings

Host Lee County scored in the eighth inning for a 4-3 Tri-County Six 3-A Conference varsity baseball win over Western Harnett on Tuesday night.

The Eagles had come back from a 3-0 deficit after five innings with a run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh.

Andrew Kelly started and went five innings. He yielded three unearned runs on four hits while walking two and striking out six. John Paul Taylor finished on the mound for Western. He walked three and struck out three over the last two and two-thirds innings. He allowed one hit and one earned run.

Freshman Nathan Jolly was 2-for-3 and scored a run for the Eagles. Collin Welch, Bradley Wilson, Caleb Scott and Kelly had hits in the loss.

Western slipped to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in league play going into a nonconference game at home against Scotland County tonight (Wednesday, March 29) at 7 p.m..

Lee wins girls soccer

Lee took a 6-1 girls soccer win over visiting Western as Meridith Mitchell had two goals and two assists for the Yellow Jackets, who are 4-0 in league play.

The Eagles are 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the league going into a nonconference match at Cleveland on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Eagles nipped in softball

Lee took a 5-4 softball win as a Western rally that produced two runs in the seventh fell short.

Kasey Genthe was 3-for-4 and scored two runs for the Eagles (2-8, 1-3).

Madison Farmer and Raynee Redington each had two hits in the loss. Destiny Rowan, Shelby Duty, Cassidie Edwards, Kiki McCoy and Sidney Roberts also had hits for Western.

Redington pitched a complete game. She allowed six hits and two earned runs while walking five and striking out four.

Lee (1-6, 1-3) scored four runs in the bottom of the first in its first win of the season.

The Eagles had topped the Yellow Jackets, 3-2 in eight innings, in their first meeting on Thursday.

Western returns to action on April 10 at Harnett Central.
