Jaequan Wells had two touchdown runs as South Johnston took a 28-14 Greater Neuse 3-A Conference varsity football win at East Wake on Thursday night.

The Trojans improved to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the league going into a home game with Cleveland (8-1, 4-0) on Friday night.

East Wake fell to 3-6, 1-2.

Wells had scoring carries of 8 and 4 yards.

Tony Faison had a 1-yard scoring run for South, which led 7-0 at the half.

Josh Schindler had a 10-yard scoring pass to Jaquain Smith.

Heze Bailey had an interception that set up a South TD and had seven receptions for 70 yards.

Dylan Lambert kicked four extra points.

“Our entire defensive box, the linebackers and defensive line, played well,” said South coach Matthew Riggsbee. “They did not rush on us very well.”

South can claim a share of the league title with a win against the Rams.

“They are clearly one of the dominant teams in our area,” Riggsbee said. “They have one of the most efficient offenses we’ll go against. But I look at them and I see the same potential in us.

“We have to have a great week of practice, stay focused and make plays. We have to keep them from making big plays and earn their points.”
