After a competitive first half, visiting Wallace-Rose Hill dominated the second half to give Midway its first loss of the season 56-14 in an East Central 2-A Conference varsity football game on Friday.
“They’re a good football team,” said Midway coach Cory Barnes. “Their coaches make really good adjustments. That’s a good staff over there. We left some plays on the field in the second half, I thought. Some overthrown balls. Some gaps we could have hit that we didn’t. But at the end of the day, they’re a heck of a football team. I felt like we were there in the first half and could build on it, but we didn’t.”
Senior Deantae Byrd ran for 100 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries and sophomore Wyatt Holland completed 5-of-13 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown, with no interceptions, and ran for six yards on two carries to lead the Raiders (7-1, 1-1 ECC).
Jaden Covington had three receptions for 62 yards. Juan Pablo Luna ran for 21 yards on two carries. Thornton Baggett had a 20-yard touchdown reception. Lane Baggett had a 15-yard reception. Junior Acosta made both of his extra point attempts.
Senior Cameren Dalrymple ran for 247 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries and sophomore Kanye Roberts ran for 233 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries to lead the Bulldogs (6-2, 2-0).
Wallace recovered a muffed kick return on the opening kickoff and capitalized with Devin Gardner scoring on a one-yard run.
Midway responded quickly with Holland completing a 20-yard touchdown to Thornton Baggett. But the Bulldogs answered just as quickly, with Dalrymple scoring on a 36-yard run.
After Midway tied the game again on a two-yard Byrd run, Wallace answered with Dalrymple scoring on a 51-yard run to take the lead for good.
At the end of a scoreless second quarter, Midway had a chance to score just before halftime, but a 22-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Nick Dobson.
Wallace scored 35 unanswered points in the second half.
Midway hosts East Duplin (4-4, 1-1) on Friday for Homecoming.
“It’s Homecoming week,” Barnes said. “It’s a big week for our seniors. It’s their last Homecoming. We’ve got to get ready for East Duplin. We’ve got to put this game behind us and be ready for Homecoming against East Duplin.”
