Union Pines posts wins at Triton

Union Pines outscored host Triton 24-11 in the second quarter and went on to a 66-52 Tri-County Six 3-A Conference varsity boys basketball win on Friday night.

The Vikings emerged from a see-saw second half with a 42-40 win in the girls game.

The Hawks fell to 9-8 overall and 2-2 in the league despite 20 points and 10 rebounds from senior Josiah Lett. Dalen Thompson had 10 points and four rebounds. Travion Sanders tallied seven and Jamari Amerson added five.

Myshon Smith had four rebounds and four steals for Triton. Keionta Burnett had three assists in the loss.

“We let up defensively in the third quarter and didn’t shoot well,” said Hawks boys coach T.J. Morrison.

Triton committed 20 turnovers and was called for 25 fouls compared to 12 for the visitors.

The Lady Hawks (7-8, 2-2) got 11 points from Kaila Cooney. Anastasia McDonald and Abby Hood added 10 each.

Zoie Starling had five points, four assists and three steals.

Tristan Ennis had a team-high seven rebounds and three steals.

The Triton girls outscored Union Pines 15-1 in the third quarter to lead, 33-23, but the visitors went on a 19-7 run in the final period.

The Hawks visit Harnett Central on Tuesday night.
