Distance training can be an isolated challenge, but Joe Jernigan doesn’t run alone during a regimen that can total 100 miles a week.
He listens to ministerial tapes as he strides along settings such as the Erwin Rail Trail.
“It’s me and the Lord,” said Jernigan after winning the annual Isaiah 40:31 five-kilometer run on Saturday morning. The event is organized by the Cape Fear Christian Academy student council and advisor Cherry DeVane.
The run was first held in 2010. There were 33 participants this year.
Jernigan, a 2003 CFCA graduate, did not go to the lead immediately on the course which runs north on Erwin Chapel Road to the first Stop sign and back to the school.
“20 minutes and some change,” he said of his time (20:22).
Scott McLeod of Benson was second in 21:22.
Women’s winner Ashley Oakley of Willow Spring was pleased with her clocking (29:20).
“Sub 30 (minutes),” she said. “That’s good.”
Senior Micah Andemichael was the first student finisher (5th overall, 23:25). Ray Butts, the 2024 champion and varsity girls basketball coach, had not trained to the same extent but was among the top finishers. Butts was fourth in 22:24. He ran 21:27 in 2024.
Zene Brown of Fayetteville won the 2025 Mile Run in 5:55. Glenna McLamb was the first female finisher in 7:18.
There were 47 runners in the mile competition.
