Cape Fear Christian Academy got everyone involved in a 55-28 varsity girls basketball win over visiting Riverside Christian Academy on Thursday night.

“I think we kind of knew what we were walking into today,” said CFCA girls coach Dwain Ellis. “So, we kind of planned to play the starters first quarter, backups second quarter to give them some extra time and try to prepare for the next game. That’s all we can do in games like this is prepare for the next one.”

Junior Cailee Ray had 20 points and sophomore Ella John Dupree had 11 points to lead the Eagles.

Perri Caroline Ennis and Madeline Brocious had eight points apiece. Mariah Bell had six points. Laney Trainer had two points.

Gracie Draughan led the Royals with 22 points and Kelsey Thompson, Amelia Edge and Karolina Tomasc had two points apiece.

Cape Fear Christian outscored Riverside Christian 20-5 in the first quarter, 21-5 in the third and 12-8 in the fourth. Riverside outscored Cape Fear Christian 10-2 in the second quarter.

Ellis played different mixtures of lineups in the second half to give his players some experience in different rotations.

“Those girls that aren’t comfortable with the ball have got to learn how to handle it,” Ellis said. “We work on ballhandling constantly in practice. I think it’s good for them to go out there and learn how to just catch and survey and not dribble every time they catch the ball. I think they learned that a lot by being out there in the third and fourth quarter.”

Cape Fear Christian travels to Berean Baptist to start Sandhills Athletic Conference play on Monday night.

“We’ve got to work on our offense,” Ellis said. “That’s something we’ve don’t have. In the first quarter we tried to run a flex and they were just lost. That’s all we’ve got to do. … Do it over and over again in practice. Indoctrinate them.

“I think we’ll be alright. Conference play is going to be a whole different animal and it’s coming up fast.”
