Triton wins girls game at Overhills, Jaguars take boys contest

Triton’s girls and the Overhills boys took wins in All American Conference varsity basketball games hosted by the Jaguars on Friday night.

The Lady Hawks improved to 8-2 overall and 2-2 in league play with a 54-35 win as JaNiah Smith led the way with 26 points on 10 of 19 field goal shooting, including five of 10 beyond the arc. A’Shari Watlington made six of 11 from the floor in scoring 17.

Tristan Ennis had four points and seven rebounds for Triton. Abby Hood added six points and six rebounds.

Watlington and Hood had six assists each.

The Overhills girls (7-6, 2-3) got eight points from Lariya Hicks.

The Jaguar boys got 16 points each from Damien Robinson and Ayden Gittens in improving to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the league with a 57-51 win.

Triton (6-8, 1-4) was more competitive than in a 99-64 season-opening loss to Overhills.

The Hawks got 20 points and six rebounds from Jalen Evans. Nate McKoy had 14 points and 18 rebounds in the setback.

Down 31-22 at the half, Triton closed within four points down the stretch, but Robinson made six of the Jaguars’ 11 free throws in a 15-point fourth quarter for the hosts.

Triton is scheduled to visit Harnett Central on Tuesday night and Overhills goes to Pine Forest (9-2, 4-0) in a matchup of the conference’s 4-A teams.
