Cape Fear Christian Academy fell 78-27 in a varsity girls basketball game against visiting Sandhills Athletic Conference opponent Fayetteville Christian School on Homecoming on Friday night.

“That basketball team is really, really good,” said CFCA coach Dwain Ellis. “They’d give our JV boys problems. The main thing is our girls just knowing what we can do. Everything’s a learning experience from here on out. The best thing that we could do in that game when losing like that is learn. Don’t make the same mistakes over and over again, which we did in the first half, but we limited in the second half. That was the main goal for the second half of the game.”

Sophomore Ella John Dupree had 10 points and sophomore Perri Caroline Ennis had eight points to lead the Eagles (10-5, 4-1 SAC).

Savannah Autry had four points. Madeline Brocious and Laney Trainer had two points apiece. Cailee Ray had one point.

Mariah Bell, named Homecoming queen after the game, had eight rebounds. Trainer had seven rebounds and Ennis controlled six on the boards. Ray had three assists.

Seventh-grader Jaidah Blake had 33 points, freshman Dezariyah Clark had 22 points and junior Lena Darrell had 17 points to pace the Warriors (11-2, 5-0).

The Warriors outscored the Eagles in all four quarters: 23-4 in the first quarter, 23-7 in the second, 18-16 in the third and 14-0 in the fourth.

The junior varsity and varsity boys games were postponed to February 8 because of COVID protocols involving the Warriors.

Cape Fear Christian travels to conference opponent Freedom Christian Academy (6-9, 2-3) on Tuesday. The Eagles won, 40-32, in the girls game at home against the Patriots the first time the teams met on January 13.

“Just learn from this one,” Ellis said. “As long as we keep learning, we’ll be fine. We’re a young basketball team. We have six seniors, but our basketball players are extremely young, 10th grade and below. We’ve got a few years to get them right.”
