Hits were in short supply as Triton’s varsity softball team edged visiting nonconference rival Midway in a 1-0 pitchers’ duel Wednesday night.

“We didn’t hit well,” said Triton softball coach Mark Whitman. “We chased a lot of bad pitches tonight. But we caused a little ruckus there in the first inning and scored a run. We did the things we needed to do. Got our speed on base with Tristan (Ennis). If we can get those first four or five runners on, we’ve got speed and can make things happen.

“Their pitcher pitched well and kept us off balance. But we played great defense. I’m proud of the girls. It’s a big win for us. It’s kind of a statement win for us, considering what happened to us last time (a 6-2 loss at Midway on March 4).”

Sophomore Aubree Bass pitched the complete game shutout for the Hawks (9-3), giving up no runs on three hits and three walks, with 10 strikeouts.

“Best I’ve ever seen her pitch,” Whitman said. “She pitched well.”

Freshman Sarah Autry also pitched a complete game for the Raiders (6-3), yielding one earned run on three hits and one walk, with nine strikeouts.

Sophomore T.K. McLean had one hit and one RBI, senior Tristan Ennis had one hit and one run scored. Junior Gracie Byrd had one hit for Triton.

Senior Rylie Williams, senior Cassidy King and junior Krista McLean had one hit apiece for Midway.

Triton scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the first inning when Ennis had a base hit and scored on another base hit from McLean.

Midway is at home against Southeastern Athletic 2-A Conference and Sampson County rival Clinton (11-2, 5-0 SAC) on Monday and at Clinton on Tuesday. Triton is at home against All American 3-A/4-A Conference opponent Pine Forest (3-6, 3-4 AAC) on Tuesday.
