Cape Fear Christian Academy scored three goals in the second half to top visiting Oakwood, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of the NCISAA 1-A varsity boys soccer playoffs on Thursday.
It took the Eagles (6-7-1) some time before Tripp Selph scored twice and Jackson Breslin added a final goal.
“We got off to a slow start,” said CFCA coach Michael Breslin. “During the first half, it seemed like we were off by just a little bit — one touch too many before passing, one step late to the ball. … Having said that, we still managed to keep pressure on the other team and had a few opportunities to score. But again, we were a little off and failed to finish.
“Jackson Bolton had a very good save on a direct kick early in the first half. We went into halftime tied at 0.
“During the half, I reminded the guys to play our game — win the 50/50 balls, fewer touches and more passing, and to keep the game in their half of the field. We looked much better in the second half. You could tell from the start that we were taking control.
“In the 45th minute, Tripp Selph scored off a direct kick from 20 yards out by placing a low hard shot to the corner of the goal. Tripp scored again in the 60th minute, assisted by Jackson Breslin. Jackson then scored the final goal in the 65th minute, assisted by Tripp. Tripp and Jackson are fun to watch play as they are both talented players and are almost always on the same page.”
