Cowan’s late bucket lifts Hawks over Overhills

J.J. Cowan scored on an assist from Brandion Surles on an inbounds play with 1.6 seconds left to lift the Triton varsity boys basketball team to a 45-43 All American Conference win over visiting Overhills on Thursday night.

“Our defense was a little better,” said Hawks coach T.J. Morrison. “They had beaten us by 11 and 15. I’m proud of our guys and happy for them.”

Triton improved to 17-6 overall and 10-3 in league play with a quick turnaround for a game at Harnett Central on Friday night,

“I told them to enjoy it until lunch,” Morrison said. “Then we’ve got to focus on another big one.”

Jamaury Taylor had 13 points for the Hawks. Ahmad Morris scored nine. Romello Pegues and Surles added eight points each. Cowan finished with six points. A.J. Dewar had one point.

Morris had 17 rebounds. Cowan had four assists and three steals,

Najiha Allen had 18 points as the Overhills girls upped their record to 13-9 for the season and 8-5 in the AAC with a 67-40 win. Natalynn Montague added 14 points for the Lady Jaguars.

The Triton girls (12-11, 3-10) got 20 points from Nashara McNeil-Watlington and 11 from A’shari Watlington.
