Eagles vanquish visiting Rams, defending state champs in girls tennis

Cape Fear Christian Academy’s girls tennis team evened its record at 1-1 with a 9-0 win over Ridgecroft at Triton on Wednesday.

The Rams dealt CFCA its only loss in the NCISAA 1-A championship at N.C. Wesleyan in a 10-1 season for the Eagles in 2023.’

The Rams roster from the state title team has been impacted by graduation and transfers.

The Eagles dropped their opener to Wake Christian, 5-4, as Karson Hamilton was out with an ankle injury.

Hamilton was back Wednesday for a 7-5, 6-4 win in the No. 1 singles over Annie Batts, a returning player for Ridgecroft.

Ella Butts won the No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2.

Samantha Autry took a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 3 singles.

At No. 4, Lily Kate Dupree prevailed, 6-2, 6-1.

Addison Lanpher was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 5.

Ava Jones was in command at No. 6 by scores of 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Hamilton and Autry teamed for an 8-5 victory at No. 1.

Butts and Dupree won, 8-4, at No. 2.

The No. 3 doubles went to Lanpher and Jones, 8-0.

“Everyone played well today,” said CFCA coach Page Jackson. “Having Karson back was a big boost.”

The Eagles travel to Oakwood (2-3) today (Thursday, September 5) for a match at 4 p.m.

Oakwood topped CFCA in the 2022 state final at Faith Christian in Rocky Mount. CFCA defeated Oakwood twice by scores of 5-4 in 2023.
