Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity basketball teams experienced some tough luck on Friday the 13th in the Southeastern Shoreline Shootout at Southeastern Christian Academy in Shallotte.
The Eagle boys were without leading scorer Kayden Dunkins and absorbed their first setback of the season, 58-55, to Triad Baptist of Kernersville.
Dunkins is averaging 15.7 points per game.
The Lady Eagles were also dealing with some unfortunate circumstances as two starters were out in a 62-17 defeat.
Varsity Boys
CFCA (10-1) jumped out to a 17-6 lead at the outset, but trailed 28-27 at the half as foul trouble proved a hindrance.
Triad (11-1) pushed its lead to double figures before the Eagles rallied within a point despite losing Elijah Ellis to an injury and playing without Conner Parrish and Caden Scarborough due to foul disqualification.
Cade Godwin stepped up with 17 points. Justin Chestnut had 13 points. Ellis had 12 before he was sidelined in the third quarter. Lathan Wilborn came off the bench for six points. Scarborough scored five and Parrish tallied two.
The CFCA boys play in the consolation game against Southeastern today at 12:30 p.m.
Varsity Girls
Glenna McLamb led the Lady Eagles (3-5) with 11 points. Adding two points each were Courtney Butts, Grace Bruha and Hailey Wangelin.
