According to an old saying, it’s tough to beat a good team three times.

It was really tough for Cape Fear Christian Academy on Saturday as the Eagles hosted Lee Christian of Sanford in the quarterfinals of the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association 1-A boys basketball tournament.

CFCA swept the Falcons in a pair of Mid-Carolina Conference regular season matchups.

Caden Scarborough scored 30 points as CFCA advanced with a 64-63 win that wasn’t decided until Kayden Dunkins got the ball for the Eagles with a defensive rebound on a potential winning possession for the Falcons in the closing seconds.

Dunkins had 14 points for CFCA (16-10), the No. 4 seed in the state tournament. Lee, the No. 5 seed, finished 17-9.

“We got defensive pressure from Cade Godwin on the last shot,” said Eagles coach Dwain Ellis.

Lathan Wilborn had seven points before fouling out. Godwin added six points. Conner Parrish battled on the interior for CFCA after Wilborn exited.

Lee took an early 14-4 lead, but the Eagles closed within 14-12 at the end of the first quarter. CFCA led, 30-27, at the half and pushed the advantage to seven points before Lee came back to take the lead.

Scarborough hit a three from the right wing with 10 seconds left for a 64-61 CFCA lead.

“Proud of this team’s accomplishments,” Ellis said.
