The Hawks, seeded No. 25 in the Eastern 3-A bracket, were outhit by a scant 7-6 margin, but eight walks contributed to a 15-0 win for the Cougars (12-12), who were eliminated in the second round with a 14-2 loss at Lee County.
The Yellow Jackets subsequently topped perennial power Greenville Rose, 1-0, in Sanford on Wednesday to set up a state quarterfinal showdown at All American Conference champion Terry Sanford, which was scheduled for Friday, May 17 at 6 p.m.
The Hawks finished 13-12 and will have to replace college-bound performers Braxton Davis (N.C. A&T) and Tucker Brown (Lenoir Community College).
