BC Astros split with Mudcats

BUIES CREEK — The Buies Creek Astros edged the Carolina Mudcats 2-1 in the second game of a Carolina League baseball doubleheader on Tuesday at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Mudcats won the opening game, 9-4, as Cooper Hummel had a three-run homer in the fifth for a 9-2 Mudcats lead.

The Astros trail the Winston-Salem Dash by 2.5 games in the Southern Division going into the deciding game of the three-game series with the Mudcats on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Buies Creek closes the first half of the league season with a four-game set at Northern Division-leading Potomac starting Thursday night.

Osvaldo Duarte had an RBI single in the third inning of Tuesday’s second game. Abraham Toro scored what proved to be the winning run in the sixth on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice by Kristian Trompiz.

Brandon Bailey (2-6) went five and one-third innings of the seven-inning matchup before Ronel Blanco picked up his third save.
