Smithfield-Selma moved to 4-0 with a 21-7 varsity football win at South Johnston in the Quad County 3-A Conference opener for both programs on Friday night.
Trailing 7-0 at the half, the Trojans tied the score on a 38-yard pass from Riley Adams to Kalib Brown with 7:39 left in the third quarter. Alex Lee added the extra point.
South’s score followed a recovery of a SSS fumble by freshman Scotty Weaver.
The Spartans went ahead to stay after blocking a South punt and starting a series at the Trojans’ 20-yard line. Gerard Sanders Jr. scored from three yards out with 3:12 left in the third.
SSS quarterback John Renfrow completed the scoring on a 5-yard keeper with 7:54 left to play.
Sanders scored his first TD of the night on an 8-yard run with 7:04 to go in the first half.
South (2-2) travels to Fike on Friday night. The Golden Demons (2-2) took their league opener, 35-14, at home over West Johnston on Friday night.
