BUIES CREEK — On a night when Taya Bolden further etched her name in the Campbell women’s basketball record books, the red-shirt senior led the Camels to a 53-40 win over Western Carolina Monday at Gore Arena.
Bolden scored 16 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and became the fourth player in program history to compile 1,000 points and 1,000 boards in a career. The double-double was the second-straight and fourth of the season for Bolden, who has 27 career double-doubles, 1,007 points and 1,002 rebounds in 130 games.
Shy Tuelle added 11 points and moved into sole possession of second place on Campbell’s all-time three point field goals list with 171. Only Caroline Bowns (176 treys from 2015-19) has made more 3-point shots in Camel women’s basketball history.
Campbell (5-3) never trailed, led by as many as 21 and forced 23 Catamount turnovers that the Camels converted into 28 points.
Vanessa Oduah and Nadia Marshall scored nine points each to lead Western Carolina (4-6), which shot just 39 percent from the field, dropped its third-consecutive outing.
Bolden became the 19th player in school history to reach the 1,000 career-point mark on a jumper with 5:53 left in the second quarter. She is just the eighth player in Big South Conference history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 boards in a career.
Bolden’s bucket with 5:53 left in the half capped an 11-0 Camel run and gave CU a 26-9 advantage. Campbell, which led by double figures for the final 28:19, held Western to just 13 first-half points.
Faith Price’s three pushed the advantage to 36-15 with 5:19 to play in the third quarter. Western cut into the margin by making five of its last seven shots, including a triple by Jacey Justice at the final horn.
Campbell shot 36 percent for the game, made 7-of-24 threes and had a 14-5 edge in second-chance points. The Catamounts hit 16-of-41 shots, but just 5-of-19 (.263) before intermission.
Bolden dealt a game-high four assists and made three steals while hitting 6-of-10 from the floor and all four of her free throws.
After a break for final exams, Campbell returns to action Dec. 15 for Education Day at home against William Peace in an 11:30 a.m. tipoff.
