The banner, the medals, the trophy, the state champions.

The Dunn Majors (12-and-under) baseball All-Stars cranked up their bats in Kenansville on Friday night to win the Dixie Youth state tournament with a pair of wins over previously-unbeaten Leland.

Dunn had defeated Leland in a very similar scenario for the AAA state title in 2016.

Dunn trailed 4-0 in the first game before coming back to force a second game for the title with a 14-4 victory.

“I told them we were going to win the first game by 10 runs, because that’s what we did in 2016,” said Dunn coach Charlie Stevens.

The local team won the second game, 13-10.

“We beat them by three runs (8-5) in 2016,” Stevens said.

Dunn will represent North Carolina in the World Series in Lumberton. North Carolina (Dunn) will play Texas on Saturday, July 28, at 5:30 p.m.

Braxton Davis had a three-run homer and Ross Stevens had a game-ending two-run blast in the first game Friday.

Gabe Dapuyen had three hits in the first game. Getting two hits each were Stevens, Anthony Jones, John Nelson McLamb and Davis. Dunn had 13 hits with Wyatt Lucas, Jalen Evans and Jamari Thompson getting one apiece.

Jones pitched all five innings of the first game for Dunn. He allowed five hits and struck out eight.

Rain was a factor on Friday night, causing play to be halted at one point.

Thompson, McLamb, Stevens and Hunter Tyndall contributed on the mound in the second game.

“It was all hands on deck,” Coach Stevens said of the pitching effort in the deciding contest.

Evans had three hits in the final game of the state tournament. Stevens and Jones had two hits each. Getting one hit apiece were McLamb, Dapuyen, Thompson, Tripp Westbrook and Jax Woodall.
