Freshman Jackson Breslin scored four goals for host Cape Fear Christian Academy in a season-opening 6-3 varsity boys soccer win over Riverside Christian of Fayetteville on Monday.

The outcome marked a successful return to competition for the program which lacked sufficient numbers to field a team in 2018.

Jeremyah McWilliams and Grayson Barefoot also scored goals for CFCA.

Michael Breslin has moved up from coaching the Eagles’ middle school boys team to guide the varsity.

“Great first outing for a young, inexperienced team,” said Coach Breslin, Jackson’s dad. “Reid Miller was a strong presence in goal. The four backs worked very well as a unit — they moved together and kept their shape. I thought Sam and Wyatt (Medlin) were very reliable as outside backs while Kyler (Anderson) and Trevor (McLamb) controlled the center.

“In the midfield, Thomas (Yoo) used his size to his advantage and was able to win balls and force the opponents out of position. Grayson did a great job moving the ball up the left wing. Trey (Tripp) and Will (Hobbs) controlled the flow of the game in the center of the field. Grayson converted a penalty kick after he was tripped inside the 18.

“Up top, Jackson and Jeremyah were able to finish the opportunities that were presented.”
