Zeke Brock, shown in 2020, had 40 points on Saturday. He’s averaging 36.7 per game.

Junior guard Zeke Brock scored 40 points as the Cape Fear Christian Academy varsity boys basketball team topped Trinity Collegiate of Darlington, South Carolina, 64-54, in a jamboree at Berean Baptist in Fayetteville on Saturday.

Brock hit all 15 of his free throws as the Eagles evened their record at 3-3. He is averaging 36.7 points per game after leading the state in assists last season with 10.8 per game.

Eighth-grader Brandon Surles added 10 points Saturday on five of seven field goal shooting.

“In the midst of the boys searching for our offensive identity, we took a step in the right direction,” said CFCA coach Dwain Ellis. “Everyone felt that they were a part of the offense, even though Zeke had 40.

“Justin (Chestnut) finished strong down the stretch with one offensive rebound after another, which is definitely what we needed to close the game out.”

Chestnut and Surles each had six rebounds. Trevor McLamb claimed five. Caden Scarborough and Elijah Ellis each grabbed four.

Brock had five steals and three assists while making 11 of 26 from the field. Chestnut scored six points. Scarborough and Lathan Wilborn tallied four points each.

Trinity Collegiate won the girls game, 74-18, over CFCA, but Ellis saw some progress as the Lady Eagles slipped to 2-3.

“The girls found out today that they can play some defense if they do it as a unit,” Ellis said. “The score doesn’t reflect the great defense we played, because we had 31 turnovers, most were interceptions for two points.

“We’re learning game by game. The second unit played big for us, scoring half our points.”

Savannah Autry had six points for the Lady Eagles. Perri Caroline Ennis had four points and eight rebounds. Meredith Taylor added two points and eight rebounds.

Niah Torres and Courtney Butts each made their lone field goal attempt for three and two points, respectively. Glenna McLamb added one point.

The CFCA teams have Mid-Carolina 1-A Conference games at Lee Christian on Tuesday night.
