Triton’s varsity baseball team fell, 15-2 in six innings, to visiting All American 3-A/4-A Conference opponent Terry Sanford on Tuesday night.
“They definitely controlled the game right from the first inning,” said Triton coach David Reece. “We just couldn’t get anything going. We didn’t really have any fire tonight. We don’t really have any sense of urgency right now and that’s what we’ve got to find.”
Junior starter Jonathan Pate was the winning pitcher for the Bulldogs (5-3, 5-0 AAC), giving up two earned runs on four hits and two walks, with three strikeouts, across four-and-two-thirds innings of work.
Senior Braxton Davis had two doubles and two RBIs and sophomore Brayden Bates had two hits to lead the Hawks (5-4, 4-1).
Tucker Brown had one hit. Zach Roberson and William Meredith scored one run apiece.
“We couldn’t really string good at-bats together,” Reece said. “We had some good quality at-bats throughout the game, but we couldn’t really string anything together. We’ve got to be able to set the tempo in the field and have it carry over to the plate and we just couldn’t do that tonight.”
Senior Ryan Seagroves had three hits, two RBIs and four runs scored. Sophomore Josh Mozingo had three hits, including a triple, four RBIs and one run scored to lead Terry Sanford.
The Bulldogs scored one run in the first inning, two in the second, four in the third, two in the fifth and six in the sixth.
Triton scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Roberson and Meredith each drew walks. Both scored on a double from Davis.
Triton plays at Terry Sanford on Thursday. The game was moved up a day from Friday due to the threat of rain on Friday.
“We’ve got to be able to do the simple things,” Reece said. “We can’t compound one problem with another. We’ve got to be able to minimize damage and compose ourselves out there on the baseball field and at the plate.”
