Triton took a 14-0 lead in its All American Conference varsity football game at Terry Sanford on Thursday night before the Bulldogs rallied for a 38-20 win.
Michael McNeill recovered a Bulldogs fumble and the Hawks capitalized with a 5-yard scoring run by J.J. Cowan with 10:24 left in the first quarter. Cowan ran 80 yards for a touchdown with 9:43 left in the half as Triton went ahead, 14-0.

The hosts went ahead to stay at 21-17 with six seconds left in the half on a touchdown pass from Jayden Wright, who completed 16 of 22 for 298 yards with five scores and one interception.
“Got it to 21-20 on a 44 yard field goal,” said Triton coach Ben Penny. “After that (running backs) J.J. and Camauri (McDougald) came out with injuries and Terry Sanford took control of the mismatches and the game. We were tough on defense all night until we ran out of gas. Couldn’t get them off the field.”
The Hawks allowed just 50 yards rushing in falling to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Cowan had 11 carries for 133 of Triton’s 241 yards on the ground.
Terry Sanford improved to 3-2 for the season and 2-0 in the AAC.
The Hawks have Homecoming against Westover (3-2, 0-2) on Friday night.
“Got to regroup,” Penny said.
