Derreon Burnett scored in the closing seconds for the Triton varsity boys basketball team on Tuesday night to lift the host Hawks to a 39-37 Tri-County Six 3-A Conference win over visiting Union Pines.
“It was a tough, grind-it-out kind of game,” said Triton coach T.J. Morrison. “Our defense was good enough to give us a chance even though our offense struggled. We were fortunate enough to make some plays and escape with a much-needed win.
“Our goal is to give up 10 points or less each quarter, defensively. We gave up seven, 10, 11, and nine.”
Emari White had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists as Triton improved to 9-12 overall and 2-5 in league play going into a conference contest at Western Harnett on Friday night.
Burnett had eight points and five rebounds as the Hawks evened the season series with the Vikings (9-11, 3-4), who took a 54-51 home win over Triton on Jan. 18.
Colby Parker had six points and three assists for the Hawks. Travion Sanders finished with five points and five rebounds. Rounding out the scoring for Triton were Kalil Hodges (4), Josiah Lett (3), Myshon Smith (2) and Tre’Sean McLeod (1).
White passed to Parker in the high post for a feed to Burnett that led to the deciding hoop. Sanders, Hodges and Parker had big baskets down the stretch.
Kaila Cooney had 13 points for the Triton varsity girls in a 67-28 loss to Union Pines. Anaya Lockamy had 10 points for the Lady Hawks (8-13, 3-4).
