Gracie Byrd scored five goals for Cape Fear Christian Academy in an 8-1 Sandhills Athletic Conference varsity girls soccer triumph at Berean Baptist on Friday.

Byrd scored just 11 seconds into the contest on an assist from Ella John Dupree. The Bulldogs equalized before CFCA got a go-ahead goal by Dupree on Byrd’s assist for a 2-1 Eagles lead at the half.

Berean was unsuccessful on a pair of penalty kicks in the opening half as one sailed over the goal and CFCA goalie Taylor Beasley had a save on the other.

“The girls came out and played soccer in the second half,” said Eagles coach Michael Breslin. “We controlled play.”

Byrd had four goals in the final 40 minutes. Dupree and Alexis Crumley scored one goal each after intermission.

CFCA, which had defeated the Bulldogs (1-11, 1-9 SAC) by a 9-0 margin at home on March 29, improved to 7-6 overall and 5-4 in league play going into a first-round game in the SAC Tournament with Northwood Temple (2-10, 1-9) on Monday at 4 p.m.
