Gracie Byrd scored five goals on Tuesday as the Cape Fear Christian Academy girls soccer team won its fourth straight game with a 9-0 victory over visiting Berean Baptist.

The Eagles improved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the Sandhills Athletic Conference with a home match against Village Christian on Thursday at 5 p.m., weather permitting.

Alexis Crumley had three goals against Berean and Ella John Dupree scored one.

Byrd and Dupree each had two assists. Contributing an assist apiece were Crumley and Abigail Taylor.

Taylor Beasley was in goal for the shutout, which was halted in the 65th minute.

“We controlled the ball for most of the game and limited Berean to only a few chances,” said CFCA coach Michael Breslin.  “It took us a little bit to get going, but once we started connecting passes it all came together and we went into halftime with a 6-0 lead.

“We’ve spent a lot of time working on fundamentals — making smart decisions and looking for options rather than just kicking the ball.  It’s paying off.”

The Eagles have won their last three matches by a combined score of 22-0.

“There’s still room for improvement as I’d like to see the girls win more 50-50 balls, but I’m pleased with their overall play,” Breslin said. “Our backs and defensive midfielders have done a great job preventing opponents from getting good shots.”.
