New CFCA volleyball coach Calvin Gaines at an open gym on Monday.

Calvin Gaines has been named varsity and junior varsity volleyball coach at Cape Fear Christian Academy.

Gaines comes from a coaching family. His dad, Jimmy Gaines, is a former softball coach at Triton. His mother, Wendy Simmons, is athletic director and has been highly successful as volleyball coach for the Hawks.

Gaines has served as an assistant coach in volleyball at Triton and has coached a travel team for the Harnett Havoc.

Kelsey Pondo guided the Eagles to the second round of the NCISAA 1-A playoffs in 2017.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Gaines said.

CFCA is scheduled to begin the 2018 season at home against Lee Christian on Aug. 14.
