BUIES CREEK — For the second time this season, a basketball game between Campbell and Radford came down to the final possession.

On Jan. 30, Chris Clemons capped a late run with a buzzer-beating three to lead the Camels to a 68-67 victory at Radford.

On Saturday, Jordan Whitfield’s free throws with 4.6 seconds to play and a defensive stop on the final possession lifted the Camels to a 64-62 win, a Big South Conference regular season title and the right to host the league tournament next Thursday at Gore Arena.

In front of a standing room-only, arena record crowd of 3,351, Chris Clemons scored 30 points and fellow senior Andrew Eudy added 19 in their final regular season home game and Campbell earned the top seed in its league tournament for the first time since the first Big South event in 1985-86.

Campbell (19-11, 12-4) will host the eighth or ninth seed Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Big South quarterfinal at Gore Arena. Second-seeded Radford (20-10, 12-4) will play the seventh or 10th seed Thursday at noon.

Radford scored the first 10 points of the game and led by 14 (28-14) on Mawdo Sallah’s bucket in the paint with 5:30 to play in the opening half. Clemons scored nine points in a 14-4 run and the Camels cut the Highlanders lead to six (34-28) at the break.

In the final period, neither team led by more than four points over the last 10:57. The score was tied seven times and the lead changed on five occasions. Eudy and Clemons scored 28 of Campbell’s 36 points. Eudy’s free throws gave the Camels their first lead (47-46) with 9:08 to play.

Clemons’ two-fisted dunk down the lane put Campbell ahead 60-56 with 2:15 remaining, but Carlik Jones answered with a pair from the line and a lay-in to tie the score at 60 with 1:01 to play. Eudy made two free throws with 47.6 seconds remaining, but Sallah scored underneath with 29.5 to go, allowing the Camels to hold the ball for a shot.

Radford double-teamed Clemons near half court and Whitfield was fouled while trying to receive a pass. A sophomore from Raleigh, Whitfield made both shots to put the Camels back in front.

On the final possession, Travis Fields was trapped along the sideline and Jones was unable to get off a shot before the horn.

Sallah had 14 points and four rebounds for the defending Big South champs, while Jones added 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Ed Polite, Jr., finished with eight points and eight boards for the Highlanders, who shot 37 percent in the final half, 41 percent (23-56) for the game.

The nation’s leading scorer (30.1), Clemons finished 10-of-22 from the floor, 4-of-13 from 3-point range, and 6-of-6 from the line while dealing out two assists, making two steals and committing just one turnover in 40 minutes. Eudy was 5-of-11 from the field, made all eight of his foul shots, and had six rebounds and three blocks in a 40-minute effort.

Campbell shot 43.5 percent (20-46) for the game, 7-of-23 (.304) beyond the arc, made 17 of 18 from the stripe (.944) and committed just six turnovers. Radford finished with a 37-25 edge on the glass, but both teams had 15 rebounds in the final period.

The regular season title marks the first time the Camels have won a league trophy since the 2010 club finished in a four-way tie for the Atlantic Sun regular-season title but were seeded fourth in the conference tournament.

Campbell improved to 7-1 vs. Big South opponents at Gore Arena and dealt Radford just its second loss (6-2) away from home in league play.

Sixth on the all-time Division I scoring list with 3,136 points, Clemons extended his double-figure scoring streak to 112 games, the longest among all active players and tied with Danny Ainge of BYU (1977-81) for second-best in Division I history. Clemons enters Thursday’s quarterfinal 14 points shy of Creighton’s Doug McDermott (3,150 from 2010-14), who ranks fifth on the all-time Division I scoring list.

Campbell’s 56 victories over the past three seasons stand as the most in a three-year span in CU’s Division I era, surpassing the 51 wins the Camels compiled from 1992-94. The team’s 12-4 record in Big South play is the program’s best since rejoining the Big South in 2011-12.

The Camels have won six of their last seven games with Radford, completing a regular season sweep for the second time in three years.

The top five teams in the Big South standings receive a bye into Thursday’s (March 7) quarterfinals, which will be hosted by Campbell. The Big South tournament begins Tuesday when the sixth, seventh and eighth seeds host first-round games.
