BUIES CREEK — Jordan Whitfield scored 17 points and Joshua Lusane added a season-high 15 off the bench to lead Campbell to a 75-60 Big South Conference men’s basketball win over Hampton on Wednesday night at Gore Arena.
Campbell (11-7, 4-3 Big South) won its second straight game and fourth in the last five after holding Hampton (5-12, 1-5) to 37 percent shooting.
Cedric Henderson, Jr. scored 14 points and dealt out five assists for the Camels, who led by as many as 26 before coach Kevin McGeehan emptied his bench with four minutes remaining. Milos Stajcic chipped in a season-best nine points for the Camels, whose reserves outscored the Pirate bench 34-19.
Hampton scored the first six points of the second half to trim a 13-point deficit to 39-32 on Russell Dean’s coast-to-coast layup with 16:40 to play. Najee Garvin’s 3-point play pulled Hampton within 49-39 with 12:12 remaining before the Camels pulled away with a 16-0 run.
Stajcic’s wing three with 7:45 remaining capped the burst and gave the Camels their largest lead of the night at 65-39.
Dean led Hampton with 17 points, while Garvin added 14 points on five of 14 shooting and 12 rebounds. The Pirates lost their second consecutive game and dropped their sixth in the last seven.
Campbell finished the night 26 of 54 (.481) from the floor, eight of 25 (.320) from 3-point distance, and committed just eight turnovers.
Lusane matched his career high in the first half alone with 15 points and the Camels took a 39-26 lead into the dressing room. CU shot 60.7 percent (17-28) in the first period — and made 13 of 15 shots inside the arc. Lusane hit seven of nine shots, including all seven of his two-point attempts before the break.
Campbell has held 15 of its 18 opponents below 70 points and entered Wednesday’s game ranked first in the Big South and 25th in the nation, in scoring defense (61.3).
Hampton dropped to 0-4 all-time at Gore Arena vs. CU.
