BUIES CREEK — Campbell closed the game on an 18-1 run and defeated Radford 70-58 Saturday at Gore Arena. Jordan Whitfield led the Camels with 17 points and in the process passed the 1,000-point mark for his career.

Ricky Clemons added 14 points, 12 in the second half, and Campbell (9-6, 2-2 Big South) held Radford without a field goal over the final 4:21 to win its second straight game.

Radford (5-11, 1-3) made 12 of its first 18 shots in the second half and led 57-52 after Rashun Williams connected from 3-point range with 4:22 to play. The Highlanders missed their final seven shots from the floor and dropped their third straight game.

Josiah Jeffers led Radford with 15 points and Williams added 12 for the Highlanders, who shot 42 percent overall (23-55) and made 5-of-18 threes (.278). The Highlanders finished with a 29-26 edge on the boards and a 13-2 margin in second-chance points.

Campbell shot 55 percent (28-51) on the day, 61.5 percent (16-26) in the second half and made 7-of-20 threes (.350) overall.

Trailing by one (29-28 at the half), Radford wrapped an 11-0 run around intermission and led 34-29 on Dravon Mangum’s corner three with 18:24 to play.

At the 14:02 mark of the second half, Whitfield became the 29th player in Campbell history and 17th in the Division I era (since 1977-78) – to reach 1,000 career points on a backdoor reverse layup off Joshua Lusane’s feed.

The decisive stretch began with Jesus Carralero’s wing three with 3:48 to play, then Whitfield hit a triple in transition with 3:24 remaining to give the Camels the lead for good. Clemons’ 3-point play stretched the margin to 61-57 and Cedric Henderson, Jr. knocked down a three from the right side with 1:36 remaining.

Clemons finished at the rim with 57 seconds left, then Whitfield and Messiah Thompson made both ends of 1-and-1 chances in the last 31.9 seconds to seal the victory. Radford’s only point down the stretch came when Jeffers made the second of two free throws with 1:24 remaining.

Henderson and Thompson finished with nine points each, while Carralero (five assists) and Austin McCullough added eight apiece. Clemons made six of seven shots and grabbed a game high seven rebounds, while Lusane dealt out a season high five assists in 16 minutes off the bench. Whitfield knocked down three of six triples and now has 1,006 points in 125 career games.

Campbell has held 14 of its 15 opponents below 70 points and entered the game ranked first in the Big South and 21st in the nation in scoring defense (60.1).

The Camels play their next two games on the road, Wednesday at Longwood at 7 p.m. and Saturday at North Carolina A&T at 5 p.m.
