BUIES CREEK — Freshman left-hander Ryan Chasse registered his first-career complete game to pace Campbell in a 4-1 win over Charleston Southern on Sunday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
The win clinched Campbell’s sixth Big South Conference series this season and moved the Camels to 27-16 overall and 15-5 in the league, while Charleston Southern dropped its 30th game of the season to fall to 17-30, 7-14 in league action.
The Camels are 1.5 games ahead of Winthrop and Radford in the conference standings. Both are 14-7 in conference play.
Chasse (6-2) allowed just three hits in nine innings, striking out eight with no walks. The Middle Creek High School product took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and gave up just one extra-base hit, a solo home run in the ninth.
The two-time Big South Freshman of the Week needed 113 pitches to move his conference record to 4-0. The earned run lowered his conference earned run average to 1.53, which is the lowest among all Big South starters. Four of Chasse’s eight strikeouts were looking, moving his season total to 22, the second most looking whiffs in the league.
Charleston Southern starter Cody Maw (2-5) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits over his six innings on the mound.
Six different Camels — Matthew Barefoot, Koby Collins, Grant Harris, Zach Minnick, Spencer Packard and Collin Wolf — had hits in the win, while both Wolf and Harris collected doubles. Harris’ two-bagger was his third of the weekend as he finished the series 4-for-7.
With one gone in the bottom of the second, Wolf doubled into left-center for his fourth hit of the weekend. Three pitches later, Collins scored Wolf from second on an RBI single through the left side. Collins advanced to second on the throw home and then scored on Minnick’s RBI single into center.
Both teams went scoreless over the next three and a half innings until Barefoot led off the bottom of the sixth with a single into left field. He stole second two pitches later. Hrica drew a walk and then he and Barefoot executed a double steal to put a pair of Camels in scoring position with no outs.
Packard drove in Barefoot and Hrica on a two-run single to push the Camels ahead, 4-0.
Chasse got the first two outs in the seventh, but a bloop single into shallow center field earned Charleston Southern its first hit.
The rookie got a strikeout to end the frame, and in the eighth, allowed just a two-out single before giving up a two-out, solo home run to Ryan Stoudemire in the top of the ninth.
The Camels travel to Raleigh on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. game at N.C. State.

Saturday setback
Campbell suffered a 9-3 defeat to Charleston Southern in game two of the weekend Big South Conference series Saturday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
Despite striking out a season-high 10 batters, Seth Johnson (2-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing six earned runs on eight hits and two walks. The Campbell pitching staff combined to strike out 13 batters but allowed a season-high 14 hits.
Charleston Southern’s freshman reliever R.J. Petit (3-0) earned the win by not allowing a run over the final four and two-thirds innings. He struck out three and gave up two hits.
Collin Wolf collected his team-leading 17th multi-hit game by going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles, a hit by pitch and a walk. Spencer Packard also had a pair of base hits, good for his 13th multi-hit game this season. Luis Gimenez rounded out Campbell’s five hits with a single.
CSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. The first two batters – Josh Litchfield and Javin Martin – reached on a walk and a single, respectively. Litchfield scored on an RBI single before Martin came around on a fielder’s choice.
Campbell cut CSU’s advantage in half, 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth on Cameron Witt’s bases-loaded walk that scored Wolf from third.
The Buccaneers went up, 4-1, in the top of the fifth on Ryan Stoudemire’s two-run double down the right-field line, but the Camels responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half on Packard’s RBI single and Collin’s sacrifice fly.
Johnson returned to pitch the top of the sixth with a one-run deficit, 4-3, and collected his 10th strikeout by getting the leadoff batter looking. He allowed a single and then issued a walk, ending his day on the mound.
Logan Heintzman came in from the bullpen with runners on first and second and one gone. The redshirt-sophomore issued consecutive walks to the first two batters he faced, which pushed across CSU’s fifth run.
Heintzman worked back and got the next batter swinging, but one batter later, with the bases loaded, Stoudemire singled into left field to score two more.
The Buccaneers added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch and an RBI double, going ahead, 9-3.
