BUIES CREEK — Daniel Hernández scored twice and Campbell defeated UNC Asheville, 4-1, in a Big South Conference men’s soccer match Sunday evening at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

The 20th-ranked Camels (3-1-1, 2-0-1 Big South) ran their unbeaten streak at home to 17 matches (15-0-2) after outshooting the Bulldogs (2-1, 2-1) 22-2, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. The Camels took 12 corner kicks to four by the visitors and did not allow a shot on target for the final 87 minutes.

Asheville jumped in front three minutes into the contest when Noe Varner scored in the box off a Miles Peay assist. However, Campbell equalized just 8:05 later on Dylan Sadler’s first goal of the season from a Jake Morris corner kick.

Hernández put the Camels in front with what proved to be the game-winner on a 30th-minute direct free kick.

Just over two minutes into the second half, Asheville’s Justin Fleer was sent off with his second yellow card of the match and the two-time defending champs played the final 42:15 with a man advantage.

Jalen James finished a 56th minute Morris corner that Diego Konincks played on for his fourth goal of the season. In the 80th minute, Humberto Chavez split the Asheville backline and Hernández finished with a right-footed shot.

Campbell red-shirt freshman Edu Rodriguez made his first collegiate start in the Camel nets, while Asheville’s Leon Musial finished with five saves, including a pair of acrobatic stops.

The Camels improved to 14-0-2 in their last 16 matches against Big South opponents. CU returns to action Saturday for a 6 p.m. kickoff at the Eakes Complex against High Point in a rematch of last season’s Big South final.
