HUNTINGTON, WV — Ricky Clemons’ layup with 25 seconds to go lifted visiting Campbell over Marshall, 67-65, on Thursday night at the Henderson Center.
The Camels (3-1) handed Marshall (2-1) its first loss of the season, fending off a 44-point second half surge from the Thundering Herd, after leading 30-21 at the halftime break.
Campbell led 43-32 at the 14:43 mark of the second half before a 14-4 Marshall run, capped by Mikel Beyers’ jumper, brought the Herd within a point, 47-46, with 10:09 to play.
With CU still holding a one point edge, 64-63 with 45 seconds on the clock, Obinna Anochili-Killen threw down a put-back dunk off his own miss, giving Marshall its first lead since scoring the game’s first basket.
Clemons answered for the Camels on their next possession, driving to the hoop off the left wing for the contested go-ahead lay-in with 25 seconds to go.
Marshall looked to drive on the ensuing trip down the court, but a turnover off the defensive pressure from Cedric Henderson, Jr. returned the ball to the Camels with eight seconds remaining, and Messiah Thompson tacked on a free throw for the two point road win.
Campbell led by as many as 12 (21-9, 11:26) in the opening frame, holding Marshall to 30 percent shooting (9-30) in the first half, including 2-of-15 from distance while knocking down four first half triples.
CU used a 12-0 run in the first five minutes of game action that included five points from Jordan Whitfield, who scored 10 in the first half.
Henderson paced the Camels with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting, adding five rebounds, four assists and a block in the win, while Whitfield posted 15 points, knocking down a trio of threes.
