Campbell begins basketball season

BUIES CREEK — The Campbell men’s and women’s basketball teams begin their 2022-23 seasons at home this evening.

The Lady Camels host N.C. Wesleyan at 5:30 p.m. in Gore Arena of the John W. Pope Convocation Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

CU women’s coach Ronny Fisher, who enters his seventh season, returns seven players and two starters from last season’s squad that won a program-tying 23 games, claimed its second Big South regular-season title in three seasons and earned an automatic berth to the WNIT.

The CU men’s matchup with St. Augustine’s at 8 p.m. also will air on ESPN+. T

The Camel men return seven letter winners, including two starters from last year’s team that finished 16-13 overall and in second place (8-8) in the Big South Conference North Division.

Fifth-year senior guard Ricky Clemons was named to the Big South preseason all-conference second team. Last year, Clemons ranked among league leaders in scoring (30th, 9.8), rebounds (15th, 5.1), free throw percentage (10th, .705), defensive boards (13th, 4.1) and minutes (7th, 34.0) while shooting 60.5 percent from the floor and starting all 29 games.
