BUIES CREEK — Campbell jumped to a 35-3 halftime lead and went on to defeat Wagner 49-3 in college football Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.

Off to their best start in the program’s Division I era (since 2008), the Camels (5-1) won their third straight game, outscoring opponents 121-10 in that span.

Quarterback Daniel Smith ran for 151 yards and threw for 120 more while accounting for four scores. A sophomore from Leesburg, Va., Smith broke the school career record for rushing touchdowns with a 66-yard run 11 seconds into the second quarter. He now has 21 rushing TDs (in only 16 games), breaking the previous mark of 20 set by DeShawn Jones from 2013-16.

Joshua Jones added 103 yards on 11 carries for the Camels, who averaged 7.2 yards per play and 24 yards per completion. Campbell gained 366 of its 486 total yards on the ground.

The Campbell defense forced six Wagner turnovers (the program’s most since 2011) that resulted in 21 Camel points. Campbell limited the visitors to just 2-of-12 third down conversions and 0-of-3 in red zone chances.

Wagner (1-5) dropped its fifth straight game and has surrendered at least 41 points in each of those outings.

Deontae Henderson recovered a fumbled snap on Wagner’s first drive to give the Camels the ball on the Seahawk 32. Three players later, Smith was in the end zone on a 16-yard run.

Wagner drove 55 yards on its next possession to set up Eric Silvester’s 37-yard field goal.

It only took the Camels one play to add a second touchdown when Smith hit Aaron Blockmon on an 84-yard pass. Smith’s 27-yard QB draw pushed the advantage to 21-3 with 3:28 remaining in the first quarter.

Campbell extended the lead to 28-3 on Smith’s 66-yard run with 14:49 left in the opening half. Dorian Jones intercepted Luke Massei’s pass and returned it 30 yards to push the margin to 35-3.

Ray Miller’s interception and 26-yard return set up the Camels with a first down on the Wagner 14 in the third quarter. Rocky Reid ran in from seven yards to extend the lead to 42-3.

Kahlil Dixon’s 24 yard run capped a 13-play, 73-yard drive that consumed 8:09 and accounted for the final margin with 4:58 left in the game.

Ryan Fulse gained 194 yards on 25 carries for Wagner, which had 209 of its 295 total yards on the ground. Massei completed 6-of-20 passes for 80 yards and was intercepted three times.

Terence Harper and Jack Ryan led the Camels with nine tackles apiece, while Tajai Owens had 10 stops for the Seahawks.
