BUIES CREEK — Campbell jumped to a 23-0 lead and never trailed Wednesday night in a 117-33 women’s basketball win over St. Andrews.
The Lady Camels (2-1) set a school record for largest win margin (84 points) and produced the second-highest scoring total in the program’s history.
Sophomore Sarah Fitzgerald came off the bench to lead five Camels in double figures with a career-high 20 points. Taya Bolden and Faith Price added 17 each, Courtney Dahlquist 12 and Brittany Staves 10 for the Camels, who shot 58 percent from the floor and outscored St. Andrews 62-10 in the paint.
Campbell led 27-4 after one quarter against the NAIA member Knights, who missed their first eight shots and had eight turnovers before scoring for the first time with 1:13 left in the opening period.
The Camels eclipsed the old win margin record of 77 points set against Davidson (107-30) on Feb. 13, 1984 at Carter Gym. The only time CU has scored more points in a game was the 2019 season opener against St. Andrews, a 122-56 victory.
Aneas Price led St. Andrews with nine points. The Knights shot just 24 percent (12-50) from the floor.
Bolden moved into ninth place on the Big South Conference career rebounding list (956) during the third quarter. None of the five Camel starters played more than 15 minutes. Tatyana Carver came off the bench to deal seven assists.
Campbell outrebounded St. Andrews, 51-22, and produced a 28-0 edge in second-chance points. St. Andrews committed 32 turnovers, which the Camels converted into 48 points. Campbell raced to a 33-2 edge in fastbreak points and the CU bench outscored the visitors 72-8.
The Camels scored 18 unanswered points in the second quarter and led, 57-15, at intermission after converting 18 St. Andrews first-half turnovers into a 26-0 edge in points off miscues.
The Campbell women return to action Saturday at 5 p.m. at No. 25 Virginia Tech.
