Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity boys basketball team opened play in the NCISAA 1-A basketball tournament on Thursday night with a 101-23 win over visiting Christ Covenant of Winterville.
Tristin Harkins led the Eagles (23-7) with 29 points, including nine 3-pointers, all in the first half. He hit seven shots from beyond the arc in the second quarter.
CFCA coach Steve Mims Jr. did not play his starters in the second half after building a 71-6 lead. The clock ran continuously for the last 16 minutes. The hosts held the ball for the last two minutes.
The Eagles are the top seed in the East bracket and will be at home to take on the winner of a matchup between Kerr-Vance and Crossroads Christian in the third round.
Kaleb Siler had 10 points for CFCA, which had a third-round bye. Scoring nine each were Cinque Lemon, Tyler Henderson, Caden Bell and Deshawn Woods. Amari Pearson had eight points and Zeke Brock had seven. Truman Claytor tallied five points. Adding two points each were Jabare Perry, Jake Gronowski and Braedon Sargent.
Nate Furlough led the visitors with 12 points.
