Cape Fear Christian Academy bounced back from a decisive season-opening loss on Friday to take a 7-1 nonconference win over visiting Lee Christian on Monday as junior left-hander Reid Miller pitched a 2-hitter.

The Eagles (1-1) had just two hits themselves against two Falcon pitchers but took advantage of 10 walks and two hit batters.

In the bottom of the first, Zake Brock walked, stole second and Deshawn Woods reached base on an error by the shortstop that allowed Brock to score for a 1-0 lead. Jake Tyndall walked and Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Walks to Trevor McLamb and River Ennis forced in runs for a 3-0 CFCA lead. Miller came home on a passed ball.

In the second inning, Jackson Bolton walked and Brock doubled to right. Woods walked to load the bases. Miller walked for an RBI and a 5-0 lead. McLamb’s single scored Brock.

Gus Adams was hit by a pitch in the third. He stole second and third, coming home on a passed ball.

Miller threw 100 pitches, allowing hits in the first and third. He walked five with eight strikeouts.

Lee Christian wins in girls soccer

Lee Christian took an 11-2 win in girls soccer at CFCA on Monday.

“Good and bad day today,” said Eagles coach Michael Breslin. “We were competitive for most of the first half. Lexie (Crumley) scored twice and we were down 5-2 at the half. … They had two talented players who we had difficulty containing. Those two players were responsible for nine goals.

“On the plus side, the girls have shown significant improvement in playing with a sense of aggression. They fought for the ball and didn’t allow the other team to dominate them. We still need to do a better job of winning the 50/50 balls and stringing together better quality passes.”

Preseason practice was limited by rain.

“Considering we’ve only had a little over one week’s worth of practices, I’m happy with the progress we are making,” Breslin said.

Knee injuries have sidelined potential standouts Meredith Taylor and Gracie Byrd of CFCA.

Ella John Dupree had her second assist of the season on Monday. The Eagles visit Crossroads Christian of Henderson on Tuesday.
