CFCA defeats top-ranked Freedom, 9-1, in softball

It took about 24 hours for Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity softball team to defeat visiting Freedom Christian but the Eagles completed a 9-1 win on Wednesday.

Play was suspended going to the bottom of the third inning on Tuesday due to a thunderstorm with CFCA leading 4-1.

The Eagles improved to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in the Sandhills Athletic Conference. The Patriots (14-2, 5-1) dealt CFCA its only league loss, 2-1, in Fayetteville, on March 25.

Freedom is the top-ranked team in the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association 2-A classification. CFCA is No. 2 in the NCISAA 1-A rankings.

The Eagles scored four runs in the first inning on Tuesday and added five runs in the fourth inning on Wednesday.

Methodist signee Kim Bordeaux pitched a 1-hitter with three walks and 11 strikeouts. Bordeaux helped her own cause with two hits and two RBIs.

Kristina Kennedy had one hit and drove in two runs. Cailee Ray had one hit, one RBI and scored two runs. Mariah Bell had a hit and scored twice.

Rhyleigh Horne walked twice and had an RBI. Megan Harrold had an RBI.

CFCA hosts Wayne Christian (12-5), the No. 2 team in NCISAA 2-A, on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. There is a middle school game between CFCA and Wayne at 4 p.m.
