Cape Fear Christian Academy played its first Sandhills Athletic Conference varsity baseball game Wednesday that wasn’t shortened due to the mercy rule. The youthful Eagles got the bats going in the bottom of the seventh inning for four runs in a 14-4 home loss.

Wesley Jackson started on the mound for the Eagles (2-6, 0-5 SAC).

“Wesley pitched well overall,” said CFCA coach Marty Priebe.

The Crusaders scored three unearned runs in the first three innings with the help of four errors. Trinity didn’t get its first hit until the fourth inning. Two hits and three walks in that frame helped produce five runs. Only two of those were earned due to another costly error.

The visitors added a run in the sixth and five in the seventh.

In six and one-third innings, Jackson allowed six earned runs on six hits with five walks and six strikeouts.

“Offensively, the hits were few, although everyone was putting the ball in play,” Priebe said. “We finally got the offense going in the seventh, scoring four runs on four hits.”

Trevor McLamb waled to start the bottom of the seventh. David Clearman singled to left. River Ennis walked to load the bases. Jackson Bolton’s single to left scored McLamb and broke up the shutout bid.

Clearman came home on a sacrifice fly by Jaden Crumley. A single to center by Zeke Brock reloaded the bases. Jackson’s single to left center brought in Ennis. A balk accounted for CFCA’s fourth run.

McLamb went 1-for-2 with a walk. Clearman and Bolton each went 1-for-3. Jackson and Reid Miller each went 1-for-4.

The Eagles are scheduled to host Riverside Christian today (Thursday, April 4) at 4 p.m.
