Cape Fear Christian Academy celebrated its winter athletic programs at a banquet in the gym on Thursday night.
Athletic director Al Myatt welcomed the gathering and Karen Parker, head of school, delivered the prayer. A meal was provided by Chauntel and Shane Summers of the Booster Club.
Coach J.D. Johnson announced awards for varsity boys basketball, which won the Senior Classic and reached the third round of the NCISAA 1-A playoffs. E.J. Bethea made All-Sandhills Athletic Conference and received a trophy for scoring 1,000 points in his high school career.
Riley Adams scored 1,000 points in his career as well. The Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award went to Lucas Capalbo, who led the Eagles (19-16) in steals with 63. Culture Awards went to Adams and Ramiro Arrillaga, for their commitment to the increased demands of the program.
Parker Watson received the Christian Character award.
In girls basketball, assistant coach Jennifer McNeill stood in for coach Bobby Lamb, who is assisting Clinton in the NCHSAA playoffs. Kristen Bass was named MVP. The Defensive Player award went to Claire Parker. Co-recipients of the Most Improved Award were Meredith Taylor and Talisha McNeill. All-conference honors went to Bass and Leah Brannon.
In junior varsity boys basketball, coach Dwain Ellis presented honors to Zeke Brock for MVP, DeShawn Woods for Leading Scorer and Owen Gregory for Defensive Player of the Year.
Aaron Hardy coached the boys and girls middle school basketball teams.
Jakson Cullen was MVP for the middle school boys, Zeke Brock won for Offensive Player and Wyatt Medlin won for Defensive Player. For the girls, Aubree Bass was Most Valuable, Ella John Dupree was Offensive Player and Rachel Clearman was Defensive Player.
Swimming coach Shannon George recognized Spencer George, who won a bronze medal in the NCISAA Division III swim meet as MVP in boys swimming. The MVP/Coach’s award in girls swimming went to Ruby George. The Eagle H2O Awards in girls swimming went to Anna Gurkin and Ginger Barclay.
In varsity cheerleading, coach Jessica Speas recognized Reyna Johnson as Rookie of the Year, Meghan Taylor as Most Dependable and Natalia Brocious for the Coach’s Award.
At the closing, Myatt noted that the gym will be equipped with six retractable goals this spring, that the NCHISAA softball Final Four will be hosted at the school and asked that athletes give parents a hand for supporting their children and CFCA athletics.
The spring athletic awards are scheduled for May 23.
