Cape Fear Christian Academy looked back at the achievements of a successful winter sports season just completed and also took a look ahead with the introduction of Lolita Tripp as new volleyball coach at a banquet in the gym on Thursday, March 2.

The gathering had a barbecue meal with a pig donated by Jonathan McLamb and cooked by Andy Beasley. Athletic director Al Myatt gave the welcome and headmaster Johnna Skatell provided the blessing/prayer.

Junior guard Zeke Brock was presented a commemorative basketball for scoring his 1,000th career point on December 29. Tripp presented the award on behalf of the CFCA Booster Club.

Tripp teaches math at CFCA and agreed to coach junior varsity and varsity volleyball teams after “prayerful consideration.” She has guided the middle school team at CFCA to Southeastern Conference championships.

Tripp takes over for Paul Hobbs, who will continue coaching at American Leadership Academy in Clayton. Hobbs, who lives and has a landscaping company in Johnston County, guided the Eagles to regular season and tournament championships in CFCA’s first year in the Mid-Carolina Conference. His daughter, Abby, was NCISAA 1-A All-State as a freshman and sophomore.

“Coach Hobbs did a great job,” Tripp said. “I’m excited about the opportunity.”

The Eagles won conference championships in middle school girls, middle school boys and junior varsity boys basketball in 2022-23.

Varsity coach Dwain Ellis presented MCC runner-up trophies to the school for the girls and boys teams, who each reached the third round of the NCISAA 1-A hoops playoffs.

Ellis also took a look forward.

“Runner-up will be motivation to improve next year,” he said.

Ellis recognized all-conference selections Brock and Brandon Surles for the boys as well as Ella John Dupree and Perri Caroline Ennis for the girls.

Brock and Dupree received Most Outstanding Player honors for the MCC Tournament. Surles and Trevor McLamb made All-MCC Tournament for the boys. All-MCC Tournament for the girls were Ennis and Glenna McLamb.

Brock was named to the NCISAA 1-A All-State team following the state playoffs. Brock finished the season with an even 1,500 career points. He scored 1,004 during the 2022-23 season, averaging 34.6 points per game.

Lolita Tripp will be the new JV and varsity volleyball coach.
