CFCA nipped in SAC showdown

Northwood Temple edged host Cape Fear Christian, 71-68, on Friday night to earn a share of the 2021 Sandhills Athletic Conference varsity boys basketball championship.

It was the first league loss for CFCA (22-7, 9-1), which had early leads of 7-0, 11-2 and 21-12.

NTA (23-7, 9-1) came back to go on top, 41-36, at the half.

Brady Rankin had 30 points for the visitors, including five 3-pointers.

Cinque Lemon scored 24 for CFCA, which won, 71-66, at NTA on Jan. 5.

The hosts trailed by 10 points at 67-57 in the fourth quarter but started a 9-0 run with a drive by Amari Pearson and finished it with a 3-pointer by Tristin Harkins.

CFCA made just 16 of 30 free throws while NTA was 17 of 23 at the line.

CFCA missed a pair of tying 3-point attempts in the closing seconds.

Harkins had 14 points for CFCA. Pearson finished eight points. Caden Bell scored seven. Paul and Sila Tako added five points each. Jabare Perry had four points and Truman Claytor tallied one.

Northwood Temple won the girls game, 69-33, despite 11 points from Reyna Johnson. Leah Brannon and Rachel Thornton had six points each for CFCA. Meredith Taylor and Perri Caroline Ennis scored four each. Natalia Brocious added two points.

Zeke Brock had 37 points in a 65-53 win for the CFCA junior varsity boys. Tyler Henderson scored 18. Jackson Bolton and Tony Cornette-McGuire had four points apiece. Luke Adams added two points.

The CFCA varsity teams enter the NCISAA playoffs next week. The JV boys have earned a berth in the SAC Tournament.
