Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity volleyball team got its first victory of the season by topping visiting Greenfield of Wilson, 3-2, on Friday night.

Set scores were 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 22-25 and 15-13.

The Knights (0-2) were the third straight 2-A opponent for the 1-A Eagles, but CFCA coach Paul Hobbs has adjusted his style.

“Every team has its own characteristics,” Hobbs said. “I like to challenge teams, but this group responds better to encouragement and support. That approach has been implemented.”

The Eagles were Sandhills Athletic Conference tournament runners-up and NCISAA semifinalists in Hobbs’ first season at CFCA in 2021. The Knights took a 3-1 win at home against the Eagles last season.

Bailey Dorman had six aces and 13 kills for CFCA in the match on Friday. Abby Hobbs had 28 assists and libero Rhyleigh Horne had 11 digs.

Greenfield rallied for a 2-1 junior varsity victory after the Eagles opened their middle school season with a 2-0 win.

The occasion was promoted as Neon Night with many spectators wearing pastel or reflective clothing.

CFCA will be at home on Thursday with the middle school playing Freedom at 3:30 p.m. JV and varsity matches with Northwood Temple, another 2-A foe, will follow.
