Golden State star Steph Curry is shown with Braxton Barefoot (seated) and his brother, Grayson Barefoot.

Braxton Barefoot is a familiar figure at Cape Fear Christian Academy, moving around campus in his wheelchair and serving in support of Eagle middle school teams.

Barefoot was not on hand on Friday as manager and statistician as the CFCA middle school boys basketball team improved to 7-0 with a 56-44 home win over Fayetteville Christian, but there was a good reason for his absence.

The Make-a-Wish Foundation made it possible for Barefoot to be an honorary coach for the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night.

Steve Kerr, coach of the defending NBA champions, took the sixth-grader to his news conferences before and after a 115-101 loss to visiting Orlando.

The Warriors were without stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson due to injuries. Duke rookie Paolo Banchero led all scorers with 25 points for the Magic.

Barefoot was asked about his favorite part of the matchup at the postgame media session.

“When (Donte) DiVincenzo started getting hot and made all those threes for us,” Barefoot said.

DiVincenzo, who played at Villanova, hit five of 11 from beyond the arc in scoring 15 points.
