The Erwin town council honored the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association 1-A softball champions from Cape Fear Christian Academy at its meeting on Thursday night.
Mayor Randy Baker, who attended CFCA’s 7-6 win at home over Pungo Christian for the 2022 state title on May 21 and made the trophy presentations, read the proclamation in recognition of the Eagles’ second NCISAA softball crown in four years.
CFCA was denied a shot at a state championship in 2020 due to COVID and was runner-up in 2021.
Many players for the Eagles were unable to attend due to schedule conflicts, but a representative nucleus was on hand including Kim Bordeaux, the winning pitcher in the state final, and Megan Harrold, who had the game-ending RBI.
Three seniors from the 2022 team are planning to play on the next level, including Mariah Bell (Mount Olive), Bordeaux (Methodist) and Trinity Olive (Southeastern Community College, Whiteville).
