Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity boys basketball team played its first game of the season and defeated visiting Riverside Christian, 107-25, on Tuesday night.
Austin Locklear led five Eagles into double-figure scoring with 19 points in limited playing time.
First-year CFCA coach Kalen Eddings did what he could in a talent mismatch.
“We played zone and everybody got a lot of minutes,” Eddings said.
There was a running clock for the second half.
Non-starters DeShawn Woods (18), Zeke Brock (17) and Eli O’Brien (14) provided significant scoring. Jeremyah McWilliams had 12 points.
Rounding out the scoring for CFCA were Jamael Carter (9), Milos Prodanovic (8), Alijah Miles (6), Sila Tako (2) and Greg Moneymaker (2).
Quinn Hyer led Riverside with 12 points.
The CFCA varsity girls were on the short end of a 37-18 score in a scrimmage with visiting James Kenan before the boys game.
“We didn’t play well, but we will move forward,” said CFCA girls coach Bobby Lamb.
Zykia Matthews and Meredith Taylor each had five points for the Lady Eagles. Meghan Taylor and Kristen Bass added three points each. Laney Trainer scored two points.
The CFCA girls open their season on Friday at 7 p.m. at home in the annual Senior Classic against Wayne Christian.
The CFCA boys meet Brown Leadership Academy of Elizabethtown at 8:30 p.m.
The Senior Classic starts Friday at 4 p.m. with the Bethel Christian girls playing Wilson Prep. The Bethel Christian boys take on Wilson Prep at 5:30 p.m.
The schedule for Saturday includes the girls consolation game at 11 a.m., the boys consolation contest at 12:30 p.m., the girls championship at 2 p.m. and the boys final at 3:30 p.m.
Daily tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students. Tournament passes are $14 for adults and $10 for students. Booster passes are not valid for the CFCA senior class fundraiser.
Hot dogs, pizza and tacos will be among the items available at the concession stand.
