CFCA varsity boys pull away

Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity boys basketball team pulled away to a 65-41 win at Grace Christian of Sanford on Tuesday night after trailing 25-23 at the half.

CFCA (7-1) outscored the hosts 25-6 in the third quarter and 17-10 in the final period.

“Improved execution,” said CFCA coach J.D. Johnson of the second-half performance.

Grace had 10 turnovers after intermission.

E.J. Bethea had 23 points and five rebounds in the win.

Lucas Capalbo had eight points, seven assists and three steals. Riley Adams had eight points and five assists.

Scoring six points each were Ramiro Arrillaga, Michael Okoye, Marcus Owens and Parker Watson. Spencer George added two points.

The CFCA varsity boys host Brown Leadership Academy of Elizabethtown on Friday at 7 p.m.

Grace won the varsity girls game, 53-22. Scoring four points each for the CFCA girls were Kristen Bass, Talisha McNeill and Aubree Bass. Leah Brannon and Jada Horne scored three points each. Adding two points apiece were Anslee McLamb and Meredith Taylor.

The CFCA junior varsity boys moved to 5-0 with a 68-46 victory as DeShawn Woods had 27 points. Zeke Brock scored 13, Jaden Crumley and Owen Gregory had nine points each, Dolan Adams tallied seven and Reid Miller had two points.

“This win came after getting after it the last two practices,” said CFCA junior varsity coach Dwain Ellis. “They challenged one another in practice to make each other better. That was the key to our win today.”

Grace takes middle school wins

Grace visited CFCA for middle school games, taking a 24-22 win in the girls contest and a 55-33 victory in the boys matchup.

Ella John Dupree had 10 points for the CFCA girls. Laney Trainor and Aubree Bass added four points each. Rachel Clearman and Ruby George had two points apiece.

Jakson Clearman paced the CFCA boys with 28 points. David Clearman had four points and Landon Alphin scored one.
