Cape Fear Christian Academy has won team and individual state championships in boys golf, but the Eagles have never had a girls golf team — until this year.
CFCA hosted a middle school girls golf match on Tuesday at Keith Hills and topped Wake Christian, 160-171, as fifth-grader Carolina Wynns led the way with a 46 over the White nine. (Her name is pronounced Car-o-leen-a)
The CFCA team played through some rain Tuesday, but with just one chance to win the school’s first-ever girls match, the Eagles were successful — and there was a rainbow when play was completed.
Carolina’s dad, Braxton Wynns, a former athlete of the year as a golfer at Campbell, is coaching the team. Her grandfather is Joe Wynns, former pro and course record holder at Keith Hills.
Her older sister, Christianna, and Annabelle Scott, both seventh-graders, also scored for the Eagles on Tuesday.
Coach Wynns is hopeful that the seventh-graders can qualify for postseason play conducted by the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association.
CFCA has a middle school match on Tuesday at Keith Hills with Grace Christian of Sanford.
